Miami International Film Festival - March 4 - 13th, 2011

Every year the Miami International Film Festival brings international and national films alike to Miami, adding culture and zest to the month of March. This year, one of the most anticipated films would be Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson's staring roll in Things Fall Apart, a film that speaks of a talented college football player that unexpectedly is diagnosed with cancer. The film would have its world premiere in Miami, bringing the rapper turned actor/producer along with the director Mario Van Peebles to the MIFF red carpet where we asked Jackson about his most talked about role yet.

MIA: It was in the press that you lost a lot of weight for this role, how much and over what length of time?
Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson: I lost a total of 54lbs over 9 weeks.

MIA: How did you do it?
Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson: I starved. [laughs] I was doing a lot of cardio, and Randall would be passing me peanuts to eat on set. [laughs] (Randall Emmett, producer of Things Fall Apart

M.I.A: Who financed the film and who plans on distributing it?
CJ: I financed everything. It was a huge financial sacrifice for me because I was unable to perform as the rapper 50 Cent during the time and be in different places.
Randall Emmett: As of right now, we are not distributing. There are some people interested in L.A. but we are waiting.

M.I.A: How much did the film cost?
CJ: Close to 3 million

M.I.A: What inspired the film, and which film did you find more personal, your first film Get Rich or Die Trying or Things Fall Apart?
CJ: It was inspired by my childhood friendship, of a friend I grew up with who was diagnosed with cancer and died. This was definitely a much more personal project.

Miami's Bling Craze: Bling for Your Thing - "Vajazzling"

Miami is the city of flash and bling. If we can get more flash for our cash, we will do it. From cell phones, cars, champagne bottles, and grills, we bedazzle it all. Thanks to someone in desperate need of more bling, we now have vajazzling. Vajazzling, the art of sticking rhinestones on your cooch area, is now all the hype. Celebrities are going on TV preaching about it, and ladies are adding it onto their tab at salons. Don't worry guys, you can bedazzle your area too (just don't ask for a vajazzling considering your privates).

To Miami's luck, we now have the bedazzled experience on the shores of South Beach at, "Glamour by Js". Feel free to customize your jeweled design and make sure to keep it safe, its not proven 100% sanitary so make sure to talk to your salon. Happy Vajazzling!

Where Did All the DJs Go? Re-Living WMC & ULTRA Music Festival!

WMC // ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL

By: Nancy Chalhoub

Ultra Music Festival. The event that drives hard core trance lovers and dance maniacs alike to the depths of Downtown's Bicentennial Park and away from Winter Music Conference's South Beach hub. Rain or Shine, this event takes place annually - this time marking its 12th Anniversary of the two-day (March 26th, 27th) music mania. Every year, for Winter Music Conference, Miami gladly attracts the world's best DJs, holding them hostage for a week of nonstop music and partying.

For the first time, the highly anticipated event sold out to more than 100,000 dedicated attendees that packed into the park. With 6 stages playing non-stop music, the sound was inescapable, even blocks away from the event. ULTRA artist regulars such as David Guetta, Benny Bennasi, Deadmau5, and Tiesto rocked the main stage as expected, with surprise guests of unconventional artists in the "dance" industry, such as Lil' John, LMFAO, Will.I.AM,  Nas, and Damian Marley. Newbies to the event such as Calvin Harris performed for the first time on the ULTRA stage, while others such as Fedde Le Grand and Kaskade moved over to their own tents of packed-in sounds.

By the end of the evening, an announcement was made that with the increased success of this year's event, next year's ULTRA Music Festival will be a 3 day event, as opposed to 2. Hold on to your ears, its bound to be a loud ride!

Jazz in the Gardens Event Review

- Nancy Chalhoub

Miami Gardens came alive on March 20th & 21st with its 5th Annual Jazz in the Gardens Event. With artists such as Robin Thicke, John Legend, Boyz II Men, and Mary J. Blige gracing the stage, the arena was packed with standing ovations. The two-day event took place from 3:00 pm until midnight, with nonstop stage action - from magician acts to live performances, the audience was constantly on their feet.

Nevertheless, no event is free of flaws, and many left the event disgruntled by Mary J. Blige's dramatic unwillingness to perform "until she felt ready." The artist that was scheduled to come on stage at 10:45 pm did not hit the stage until 90 minutes later, leaving her fans urgently waiting. Not only did Blige leave her fans waiting impatiently, but also press, whom she had waiting for over 45 min until she came out for less than two minutes for photos, refused to answer questions, and hurried off. Before even stepping anywhere near the backstage press room, the diva sent her body guards twice to make sure press was standing 10 feet away from where she would take her almost non-existent poses, and scurry off.

Regardless of Blige's drama, the event was one not to forget. John Legend, who finished his performance and stepped off stage, came back out to perform one more song for whom he called, "determined fans standing in the rain." Robin Thicke made sure to perform all his hits, from his sultry slow jams such as "Sex Therapy" to his upbeat hip-hop tune "Wanna Love You Girl". All in all, the Jazz in the Gardens event is one that will always be anticipated, and we can't wait until the next Gardens event.
